AI use

Clear guidelines on the use of AI across all classes are imperative to make a level playing field across the university. Many students have experienced a variety of different opinions projected by lecturers that either advocate for the use of AI or oppose it and are strict about its use. This petition demands a clarified guideline that is set as a standard across all subjects in the university. It establishes consistent standards for the acceptable use of artificial intelligence across all subjects. Such guidelines should clearly outline what forms of AI use are permitted, restricted, or prohibited in assessments, while ensuring that expectations are communicated transparently to both students and staff.

We respectfully encourage the University to consider:
  • Set a list of rules that showcase the acceptable side of AI and what they deem as improper use. This standard is applied to students and lecturers across all platforms.
  • Offer training and resources
  • Provide practical examples of how AI is used as a supporting tool during workshops
  • Having clearly stated the Expectations of AI that are the same for all courses/subjects

We are calling on Western Sydney University to review and submit a clear guideline that is used as a precedent for students across the university

Why is this important?

This campaign is important for change, as AI is a clear part of university study that is continuing to grow. AI is becoming more common for brainstorming and research to help students understand difficult concepts. This is leading to students feeling uncertainty about what is considered responsible use and where the boundaries are.

Student involvement matters because when students come together, we have a stronger voice at advocating and can show that clearer AI guidelines are an important issue that needs to be addressed.

We are not demanding the complete prevention of AI use, but rather becoming more responsible and conscious about the effects AI has on current and future cognitive function. If your crucial years of learning as a student are being taken by AI work, how will you thrive in real professional settings in your career?

By signing our petition, you are a supporting voice for change to help WSU students have access to clearer guidelines when navigating AI usage within the university.
