An urgent need for Informtion In Yolngu Matha
We, the Yolngu people of Arnhem Land, urgently need our questions answered so we can understand many things about the Balanda world that now controls our lives. Many of our people are sick and dying. We need information about chronic disease. Our people need more jobs, and we need to learn how to start our own businesses. Many of our young people are ending up in jail, and we do not understand the Balanda law or why this is happening.
English is not our language, and we struggle to understand it. So we need the answers to these questions, in our language, Yolngu Matha.
Wamut Richard Trudgen has been living with us for over 50 years. He speaks our language, knows our law, and our culture. He, along with our elders, built Yolngu Radio in 2002. And when it was first built, it delivered a lot of this important information, but not today.
The programs on Why Warriors Pty Ltd's website, djambatjmarram.com.au, are a good example of the sort of programs we desperately need. They have over 600 podcasts and 62 videos on this Yolngu learning site.
We need answers to our questions and access to important information like the news, so we can understand what is happening around the world. It would be good if Wamut Richard could
1. Answer a lot more of the questions we have.
2. Build more of the Yolngu school that is on djambatjmarram.com.au.
3. Teach us more English like he does on djambatjmarram.com.au
4. And give us access to a good Yolngu Matha English audio dictionary.
We want Wamut Richard (Richard Trudgen) and his Yolngu production team to be able to continue their very valuable work.
So we petition NIAA to fund Why Warriors so they can build a lot more really good programs that we need.
