Constitutional Consequences for racist politicians

Protect All Australians: Ensure MPs Face Consequences for Racist Conduct”

Petition Text:

Australia’s Parliament currently allows elected officials to remain in office even after making racist or discriminatory statements. This creates a dangerous gap: MPs can harm communities, perpetuate inequality, and erode trust in government without facing consequences. Recent legal rulings against Senator Pauline Hanson show her statements were legally recognized as racist, yet there is no mechanism requiring her to resign or be held accountable. This lack of accountability leaves First Nations peoples, refugees, and minority communities vulnerable to ongoing public harm and social division.

We call on Federal MP Tanya Plibersek to champion urgent reforms that hold MPs accountable for racist conduct. Specifically, we ask her to:

  1. Close parliamentary loopholes so MPs who engage in racism or discrimination can be removed from office.
  2. Introduce clear consequences, including mandatory resignation when racist behaviour is legally documented.
  3. Strengthen anti-discrimination policies and cultural awareness training in Parliament.
  4. Ensure transparency and public reporting of complaints, rulings, and consequences related to MPs’ discriminatory behaviour.

All Australians deserve a Parliament that reflects our values of equality, justice, and inclusion. Sign this petition to demand action and protect communities from racism in leadership.
