Count Women's Reproductive Health in Australia's Data

Count Women's Reproductive Health in Australia's National Data

Australia cannot solve a problem it does not measure.

Millions of Australians live with chronic reproductive health conditions such as endometriosis, adenomyosis and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Despite the significant impact these conditions have on education, employment, productivity, healthcare and quality of life, they are not adequately captured in Australia's national population data, including the recent Census.

Endometriosis alone affects an estimated one in seven women and those assigned female at birth. Yet there is no comprehensive national dataset that tells us how many Australians are living with these conditions, how they affect people's lives, or where support and services are needed most. Without reliable national data, governments cannot accurately plan healthcare, allocate funding, support research, or develop evidence-based policy.

This is not just a statistic; it is the reality of millions of Australian women.

I am currently completing a Master's degree while living with endometriosis. Endometriosis has disrupted my education but remains largely invisible in the data used to inform national decisions.

Countless others share my experience. Students miss classes. Employees take unpaid leave or reduce their working hours. Families face high medical costs. Many people wait years for a diagnosis while their symptoms are dismissed or misunderstood. These impacts deserve to be recognised and measured.

I am calling on the Australian Bureau of Statistics to work with the Australian Government, researchers, clinicians and people with lived experience to improve the collection of national data on chronic reproductive health conditions.

Specifically, I ask the ABS to:

Investigate including questions about diagnosed chronic reproductive health conditions, such as endometriosis, adenomyosis and PCOS, in future Census reviews where appropriate.
If inclusion in the Census is not feasible, collect this information through another large-scale national ABS survey.
Measure how these conditions affect education, employment, workforce participation, income and quality of life, not just health outcomes.
Publish regular national statistics so governments, healthcare providers and researchers can make informed decisions based on accurate evidence.

Better data leads to better policy.

When governments know how many people are affected and understand the true impact of these conditions, they can make better decisions about healthcare funding, specialist services, research investment, workplace support and education.

Women's reproductive health should not remain invisible simply because it has never been counted.

By signing this petition, you are calling for Australia's national data to better reflect the lived experiences of millions of people. It is time to recognise chronic reproductive health conditions as a significant public health issue and ensure they are counted in the data that shapes our nation's future.

Because if we don't count women, we don't count their experiences and we cannot create policies that truly meet their needs.

Why is this important?

This campaign is about ensuring that millions of Australians living with chronic reproductive health conditions are no longer invisible in the data that shapes our nation's future.

Conditions such as endometriosis, adenomyosis and PCOS affect education, employment, finances, relationships and overall quality of life. Yet without comprehensive national data, governments cannot fully understand the scale of these conditions or make informed decisions about healthcare funding, research, specialist services and support.

This issue extends far beyond those living with these conditions. It affects families, employers, educators, healthcare providers and the Australian economy. Better data leads to better policy, more targeted investment and improved health outcomes for current and future generations.

By joining this campaign, you are supporting evidence-based decision-making and helping ensure that women's reproductive health is recognised as a national priority. Together, we can advocate for national data that reflects the real experiences of Australians and creates lasting change.

If we don't count these conditions, we can't fully understand them. And if we don't understand them, we can't effectively address them.
