Scrap the Fuel Tax – Help Australians Survive the Cost of Living Crisis

Dear Members of the Parliament of Australia,

I am writing to urge the Australian Government to take immediate action to reduce or temporarily suspend the fuel excise tax in response to the ongoing cost of living crisis affecting Australians across the country.

Fuel is not a luxury for most Australians—it is a necessity. Families rely on it to get to work, transport their children, and access essential services. Small businesses and tradespeople depend on fuel to operate and keep the economy moving. With rising costs across housing, groceries, electricity, and insurance, the current price of fuel is placing increasing financial strain on households and businesses alike.

The current fuel excise adds a significant cost to every litre of fuel purchased. While this tax contributes to government revenue, the pressure it places on Australians during a period of high inflation and economic uncertainty is becoming unsustainable for many.

We respectfully call on the Government, including Anthony Albanese and Jim Chalmers, to consider the following actions:

  • Temporarily suspend or significantly reduce the fuel excise tax.

  • Provide immediate relief to households and businesses facing rising fuel costs.

  • Review long-term fuel taxation policies to ensure they remain fair and sustainable for Australians.

Reducing or suspending the fuel excise, even temporarily, would provide immediate and meaningful relief to millions of Australians and help ease pressure across the broader economy.

Australians are asking for practical action to help manage the rising cost of living. Addressing fuel tax is a direct and effective step the Government can take.

Thank you for considering this request on behalf of Australians who are struggling with rising costs.

Sincerely,
Concerned Australians

Why is this important?

Australians across the country are facing a serious cost-of-living crisis. The price of groceries, housing, electricity, insurance, and everyday essentials continues to rise, placing increasing pressure on households and small businesses. At the same time, Australians are paying a significant fuel excise tax on every litre of fuel they purchase.

Fuel is not a luxury in Australia—it is a necessity. Millions of Australians rely on their vehicles to travel to work, transport their families, run businesses, and move goods across the country. When fuel prices rise, the cost of nearly everything rises with it, including food, transport, and services.

Reducing or temporarily suspending the fuel excise would provide immediate financial relief for families, workers, and small businesses during a time when many Australians are struggling to keep up with rising costs.
