Enough is enough!
This stretch of road has effectively become a high-speed thoroughfare for many motorists, creating a hazardous environment for all who use the area. The road is heavily shared by pedestrians, cyclists, joggers, tourists, and local residents, as well as those accessing the nearby boat ramp at Pelican Beach. It is also frequented by the popular Aqua Duck tourist vehicle, further increasing the diversity and vulnerability of road users.
Due to the high level of activity and the proximity of the boat ramp—situated just around a bend—there have been numerous near-miss incidents involving vehicles entering and exiting the ramp. These conditions are compounded by excessive speeds, particularly during peak periods 7.00 and 10.00am and 3:00 pm and 6:00 pm on weekdays, when traffic volumes and noise levels are at their highest. Motorbikes, trucks, and buses contribute significantly to both the noise and safety concerns during these times.
The volume of vehicles using Waterways Drive is increasing and with the re development of the Marina Mirage precinct this will further compound the problem.
Given the circumstances, we strongly urge the Council to consider implementing and actively enforcing a 40 km/h speed zone along this section of Waterway Drive. Such a measure would provide the following benefits:
- Reduction in traffic noise for the many residents and holidaymakers in the surrounding high-density area
- Improved safety for pedestrians, cyclists, joggers, tourists, and recreational users
- Decreased risk of accidents, particularly in a location where visibility and turning movements are already challenging
- Enhanced safety for those accessing and departing the Pelican Beach boat ramp
This is a busy and heavily used road where preventative action is both necessary and reasonable. Without intervention, it is only a matter of time before a serious incident occurs.
