Petition EN9915 - De-scheduling Entheogenic Plants and Fungi from Schedule 9 Poisons Standard
Petition Reason
This petition draws to the attention of the House that naturally occurring entheogenic plants and fungi containing psilocybin, mescaline, ibogaine and DMT—have low physiological toxicity, no established lethal dose in humans under normal conditions, and demonstrate significant therapeutic potential for PTSD, depression, addiction and end of life anxiety. Classic serotonergic psychedelics such as psilocybin, mescaline and DMT act primarily as 5 HT2A receptor agonists and do not activate the dopamine reward pathway associated with addiction. They do not produce dependence, withdrawal or compulsive use, and are not associated with drug seeking behaviour. In contrast, legal substances such as alcohol and nicotine, and many pharmaceutical drugs, act through dopamine based reinforcement mechanisms and cause substantial public health harm. Despite this, these natural substances remain in Schedule 9, a category defined for substances with “no accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse,” which is inconsistent with modern scientific and medical evidence. Since rescheduling on 1 July 2023, psilocybin assisted therapy has become legally accessible only through private clinics at an estimated cost of approximately $25,000 per treatment. As it is not listed on the PBS, access is effectively limited to wealthy Australians. Given strong international evidence of benefit, this inequity in mental health care raises serious human rights and religious freedom concerns.
Petition Request
We therefore ask the House to 1. Remove naturally occurring entheogenic plants and fungi from Schedule 9. 2. Support expanded scientific and medical research. 3. Enable states and territories to decriminalise community based healing practices. 4. Ensure equitable access to emerging mental health treatments.
Why is this important?
Because humans evolved in symbiosis with nature through plant medicine teachers, and throughout history those in power have sought to restrict access to our plant teachers, because they want to control our thoughts and beliefs. Indigenous wisdom keepers were criminalised, oppressed, forbidden and incarcerated for using their ancestors tools for the soul, by colonisers, and told to use poisons like alcohol. The result is a global disconnection from spirtit, self, others, the planet and humanity. Entheogenic plant medicines can reconnect us to everything in an empathetic way so all beings can live in symbiosis. Wars will end and we can become one race "THE HUMAN RACE".
This was our evolutionary tragectory before the evil of religions, colonisation, greed, corruption and capitalism became the chosen path for humanity.
The current way is not working and the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.
We need a global reset, and this is that global reset.
And as a side effect plant medicines will cure or at least greatly reduce human suffering from, depression, addiction, loneliness, suicide, PTSD and will make them feel one with their creator.
